MA'ALEH ADUMIM
MA'ALEH ADUMIM (Heb. מַעֲלֶה אֲדֻמִּים), city located east of Jerusalem, on the Jericho road. Ma'aleh Adumim was founded in 1977 by Israelis and new immigrants. The city is located on land occupied by Israel during the Six-Day War, spreading over 20 sq. mi. (50 sq. km.). Various Israeli governments have avowed that Ma'aleh Adumim will remain part of Israel in any peace settlement. In 2002 the population of the city reached 26,500, growing at the high rate of 2.9%; annually. The majority of the population works in nearby Jerusalem, while some are employed in the industrial area of the city. (Shaked Gilboa (2nd ed.)
